Match Report – 2nd XI v Upottery 1st XI (A) – 8th July 2023

Buoyant after last week’s win which sent Thors top of the D Division East, the 2nd XI arrived at Upottery to start the second half of the season.

With wet weather around, the toss was delayed & the match reduced to a 42 over affair. Stirling lost the toss & Upottery elected to bat. The visitors line-up:- J.Farley, A.Daldorph, D.Baldock, S.Jefferson, B.Coe, P.Stirling+, H.Squire, B.Heard, J.Broom, J.Stirling*, E.Vukusic.

Broom & Vukusic took the new ball for the visitors & despite a couple of free-scoring overs by Upottery openers Broom & Pulman, managed to keep it reasonable tight until the heavens opened after 7.1 overs with the score on 26-0 & the players left to seek solace in the dressing rooms.

A lengthy rainbreak ensued & the match was reduced to 33 overs per side. The players retook to the field which had withstood a great deal of rain, not before headshots were taken by DCL celebrity Conrad Sutcliffe.

Pulman & Broom resumed & came out swinging. Jacob Broom, bemused by the chorus of “keeping going Broomy” whilst bowling to his namesake, finished his 7 overs with 0-33 after several plays & misses. Stirling immediately introduced himself from the other end after the completion of Vukusic’s 4th over.

Heard replaced Broom & was the first to strike, removing Broom on his third life after a couple of drops, caught & bowled for 42 & the hosts hurried to 90-1.

Pulman was the next man to go, bowled by Stirling for 47. There was a switch of ends for Heard after Stirling had bowled his 7 for 1-40, with Henry Squire introduced from the pavilion end.

A second deserved wicket for Heard came courtesy of an Andy Daldorph catch after an uncharacteristic drop with Mitcham back in the hutch for 20.

Squire bowled good areas but consistently good running from Upottery saw the score rising to 172 before the 4th wicket fell, Squire knocking back Adam Pulman’s off stump. Erin Vukusic returned and removed Kidson for 39, before P.Stirling stumped the third Pulman, Andrew, to fall with the last ball of the innings from Heard (3-46). Upottery had raced to 185-6 from their 33 overs.

Farley & Daldorph opened the reply for the visitors, with the former the first to go for 2, LBW to Kidson with the score on 7.

D I F Baldock, promoted up the order after a rendezvous with his former South Devon colleague & the DCL correspondent, was next in. On a pitch which was quickly looking harder to bat on than the first innings, accompanied by some tight bowling from the hosts, Baldock soon fell for 4 after skying on back to bowler R.Pulman with the score on 18.

With the score on 33, Daldorph fell to the same dismissal, although a better grab by Pulman on this occasion after the Thorverton opener had smashed the ball back at him with real venom.

Sam Jefferson & Ben Coe patiently set about the rebuild from 33-3 & the game meandered along with Thors falling behind the rate despite the best efforts of the 4th wicket pair’s attritional scoring.

Coe was highly unfortunate to depart for 22 after a ricochet from bowler Frost’s hand found it’s way into the non-striker’s stumps following a straight drive from Jefferson. 91-4.

Jefferson, knowing the the rate was climbing soon followed Coe, caught by Broom in the gully off of Andrew Pulman for a well-made 40.

With overs running out, P.Stirling & Heard came & went for 4 & 1 respectively, whilst Henry Squire looked more at ease striking at over a run a ball for his 25 before Kaal struck to leave the visitors hopes in tatters at 138-8.

Broom wafted his way to 9 before being caught to leave Thors on the brink at 139-9 with two and a bit overs left. Stirling struck a couple of fours before he was last batter out for 10 & the hosts were winners by 34 runs.

The congestion continues in the top half of the division as the 2s slide down to 4th. Next up is a home game against Budleigh Salterton, with Thors aiming to complete the game with more players than they did at the tied return fixture in May.

Match Report – 1st XI v Plymouth 1st XI (H) – 8th July 2023

As we begun the 2nd half of the season, the 1s were focused on getting back to winning ways following a couple of defeats.

The line up: A.Pitt, D.Robbins, A.Chilcott, J.Geraghty, H.Choules+, L.Vukusic, B.Wakeley, G.Daldorph, A.Jopling, B.Slaviero, J.Choules*.

Choules held his nerve at the toss and elected to bat despite some rain circling Station Ground. There was a heavier downpour after the toss but the game started on time.

After the opening pair of Pitt & Robbins took 6 off the first Siddiqui over, Pitt snicked off in the second allowing him to assist Alice with a monumental tea effort with Vice Presidents starting to filter in.

Chilcott joined Robbins, the latter putting away the bad ball expertly, striking four 4s on his way to 25 before he was snaffled down the leg side.

Chilcott and Geraghty showed no signs of slowing things down as Jack took Siddiqui for three 4s in a row on the way to 59-2 after the first ten.

The visitors introduced some spin after the powerplay which appeared slightly harder to get away but Thors rotated the strike well. After 14 overs another shower hit and the players came off with the score on 71-2.

By the time the players returned to the field, 5 overs had been lost so we now had a 45 over game. Thors slick scoring rate meant the loss of overs wasn’t significantly damaging for the batting side.

Geraghty and Chilcott got themselves back in and took the score past 100 until Jack was unlucky to get one that kept low as he was bowled by Reddy for 45.

H.Choules joined Chilcott and the pair sought to make the most of the left hand/right hand partnership by turning the strike over. Sticking with spin, ex-captain Golby-West was introduced for the city side and he had Chilcott caught behind for 35 as the total reached 127-4.

Vukusic was next man in and coming off some impressive performances in the 2nd XI looked solid from the off. He and H.Choules took the score past 130 going into the last 15 overs.

Plymouth fought back well in the closing stages of the innings and the pair could only add another 11 runs before Vukusic was caught at mid wicket. Wakeley was next to go, caught at mid on, with H.Choules (19) going soon after following a running mix up. Thors wobbling at 157-7.

The tail couldn’t hang around for long before Daldorph was last out for 10 and Thors were 170AO with 10 balls unused.

After a generous tea, Thors started the defence with a good intensity. Slaviero and Daldorph beat the bat on numerous occasions from their usual ends but it was a phenomenal caught and bowled from George that was the breakthrough, removing Siddiqui for 8.

The opening pair continued to toil and continued to beat the outside edge regularly with the score reaching 28-1 after 6 overs apiece.

A double bowling change of J.Choules and Jopling tried to make the most of the turning wicket and Thors would have still felt in the game as half chances kept coming in the form of some aerial strokes and LBW appeals.

It wasn’t until the 18th over that we finally struck again though, Vukusic doing extremely well to get into position and steady himself at mid off to take the grab off of a Jopling leggy.

Just before drinks Choules removed opposite number Haffenden LBW following a brave sweep shot and the total reached 62-3. Opener Stephenson was next to go 1 run later for a patient 29 from 71 balls, caught at short mid wicket off of Choules.

Due to the tight start, the city side now had to consider run rate as well as keeping wickets intact as Thors kept applying pressure. Jopling had a second after drinks and with the score at 71-5, Thors looked favourites on paper. However with 2 ex captains in Golby-West and Varcoe in, Plymouth would have also fancied their chances.

A mistake from the latter, however, gifted Choules his 3rd with help from a smart catch on the rope from Daldorph. Pitt was introduced from the River End and struck in his 2nd over, the visitors now reeling at 89-7.

West was still there though and with the runs likely to have to come from him, he increased his scoring rate finding the boundary on a few occasions, taking the score past 100 with just over 5 an over needed.

With Choules (3-21) bowled out at the Pavilion End, Jopling was introduced. He got one to keep low, striking West’s pads and the umpire had no choice. Plymouth 111-8.

The final 2 wickets went down with little resistance as Slaviero was too quick for Rahmanzai and Pitt had a second when Rogers skied one to mid on.

Thors 53 run winners and move back into the top half of the A Division.

The Mid-Season Report – 2nd XI – Jack Stirling Interview

As the first half of the Devon Cricket League drew to a close with the 2nd XI winning at Topsham to go top of the D Division East, we sat down with captain Jack Stirling to digest the season so far.

You must be pleased with the first half of the season particularly after last year’s promotion?

Absolutely. I think I’d mentally braced myself for a transitional season of consolidation but to be top of the table at halfway is fantastic, especially considering some patchy availability at the start of the year.

Availability is a lot stronger now, are there plans to make sure people are getting as much cricket as possible? Is a 3rd team on the cards?

It’s something we definitely need to look at. My job has become significantly harder & the worst part of it is telling someone they haven’t got a game of cricket on a Saturday. It’s obviously part of the 5 year development plan & from our last committee meeting I can say we have some irons in the fire in that regard.

What are the stand out performances that have got us top of the league?

Obviously the 100s from Andy Daldorph & Sam Jefferson were worthy of winning any matches. 5fas from Bobby Heard & Luke Vukusic did wonders for us too. Jay Porter’s 77* when we were under the cosh against Heathcoat is definitely worthy of a mention, but there have been some great team performances too.

You mention team performances, which has been the highlight?

I think coming back from Budleigh with a tie despite having 8 players left at the ground has to be the standout, especially as we fielded with ten for over half of the overs.

What are the goals for the 2’s half of the season?

I don’t want to get carried away; it’s a really tight league at this point with 5 points separating top and 5th. I think a top half finish would be a great achievement all things considered. There are some good sides in this league & availability will be lacking on some occasions, so I’d be content finishing in the top 5.

Is it a case of more of the same to achieve that?

I think so. The competition for places should spur people on in the second half. I do believe we can beat anyone in this league on our day, we’ve just got to make sure that it’s our day consistently.

And any areas for improvement?

I think in a couple of the defeats we’ve let our heads drop after a reasonable opposition partnership & it’s cost us. I think we just need to remain positive regardless of the situation we find ourselves in.

Finally, if a tree falls in a forest and there is nobody to hear it, is there a sound?

It wood make a sound, woodn’t it?

The Mid-Season Report – 1st XI – Jake Choules Interview

As the first half of the Devon Cricket League drew to a close with the 1st XI beaten by Exeter, we digest the season so far with Jake Choules.

So, the 1s currently sit in 6th, 21 points off second & 17 above the relegation zone. What’s the goal from the halfway point?

The goal is to continue to consolidate in this league. We won 4 in the first half so if we can go one better and win 5 in the 2nd that would be great.

What has been the high point of the season so far?

Budleigh away is sticking out, a great game on a sunny day at their impressive new ground. Brilliant to post 250 with Jack getting a ton then getting over the line by one runs thanks to an amazing last over by Slavs.

And the low point?

The batting collapse at Abbots was a tough one to take. I’m hopeful lessons can be learned though.

It must’ve been nice to receive essentially two byes in the Wombat Devon T20 as we play in the quarter final on Friday, how do you rate our chances of progressing in the competition?

To be honest, it feels a bit odd being in a quarter final without playing a game. I would’ve much preferred to have done it the hard way like we did with the Corinthian Cup. Excited to test ourselves against a good Plympton side though, we will go down there with a positive attitude and nothing to lose.

Jack Geraghty leads the runscoring charts with 335 runs, how impressed have you been with the overseas signing?

Really happy with Jack, he’s clearly a seriously talented batter. I think there is more to come though and hope he can kick on in the second half with bat and ball.

Stats aside, who have you been most impressed with so far this season?

There’s been some great team performances, especially in the field. But aside from Jack, Dan and Andy have shown some form at the top of the order so I hope to see that continue. Harry has shown real maturity in the middle order and I doubt many teams would say no to an opening bowling pair of George and Slavs.

What’s been the funniest moment of the first half of the season?

Jack being introduced to the Great British stinging nettle.

You’ve used 18 players so far including debuts for Billy Wakeley & Henry Squire. Can we expect that number to exceed the 20 players used last season?

Availability has actually been pretty good in general, we named an unchanged side for 3 weeks in a row at one stage. I think the high number is more a testament to the strength of the squad – also demonstrated by how well the 2s are doing.

Luke is deservedly back in on Saturday and I’m sure there will be opportunities for others throughout the season too.

Have you identified any areas for improvement?

The batting collapses in the last 2 weeks can’t be ignored and we need to nip that habit in the bud quickly. If we bat then overs we will win more than we lose. We’re bowling and fielding pretty well but always room for improvement. Hopefully we’ve already hit our quota for dropped catches this season!

How’s the dressing room atmosphere compared to previous years?

The atmosphere is always good at Thorvy but Billy and Jack have been really positive additions and are great guys to have around the dressing room.

Finally, cricket has been in the headlines for all the wrong reason again recently, do you have any thoughts on the state of the game generally?

Personally I think the report was overdue and it seems that the ECB are going to respond positively so it will be interesting to see how it filters down to village cricket.

Match Report – 1st XI v Exeter 1st XI – 1st July 2023

At the halfway point in the Devon League season the 1s hosted top of the table Exeter.

The team:
A.Pitt, D.Robbins, G.Greed, J.Geraghty, H.Choules, G.Daldroph, B.Coe, S.Jefferson, B.Slaviero, A.Jopling, J.Choules.

With a bit of cloud cover and last week still fresh in the mind the skipper elected to bowl at the toss.

Slaviero and Daldorph kept things extremely tight from their usual ends with the score only reaching 21-1 after 6 overs a piece. Daldorph with the wicket of Abrahams caught in the gully for 0. The pair were unfortunate not to have more when a couple of chances behind went down.

Jopling and Choules were the change bowlers and Exeter’s overseas player Edwards & Devon’s Sam Read looked to increase the scoring rate.

Jopling removed Read LBW for 20 right on the stroke of the first drinks break – 45-2.

Charles Clist came in with a clear instruction to increase the rate and gave a number of chances before finally being caught on the rope by Andy Pitt off of Jopling for 25.

After 6 overs from Choules who had struggled with the breeze, Pitt then replaced him at the river end and at the halfway point the total was 100-3.

A jaffer from Pitt in the 30th over dislodged Mcabe’s off stump which brought Buckingham to the crease. He batted sensibly with opener Edwards who passed his 50 with relative ease.

Once a good Jopling spell was over (2-32), Choules was reintroduced, this time from the Pavilion End. With 15 to go another drink was taken as the score reached 131-4. Thorverton restricting Exeter will but the table toppers with set batters and wickets in hand.

Thors sought to disrupt Exeter’s plans the period after drinks with some 1 and 2 over spells. Pitt removed Buckingham for 23 as the score was 157-5 going into the final 10.

The new man Felix Joseph showed some aggression using his feet against Pitt and Slaviero in particular before a mix up had Edwards run out for a very well made 95. Daldorph (3-30) bowled Joseph the very next ball before cleaning up opposition captain Joe Gore to secure the ‘team hat trick’.

There were no boundaries in the final couple of overs but some good running gave Exeter a decent score of 226-8.

The talk at tea was that the score was around par or just under but either way Thors would need to bat well. It started promisingly when 11 was taken off of Gore’s opening over with the help from some extras.

Robbins left a straight one off of Royal Navy colleague Pete Hensor the very next over, however, and Thors were 16-1 after 2.

George Greed looked in fine touch, getting off the mark with a boundary and going on to strike a 4 for 4 overs in a row. He and Pitt rotated as well while Exeter continued to serve up some extras giving us 42-1 from 6.

Despite it still being the first powerplay, Exeter turned to the spin of Buckingham and Read who despite leaking some boundaries early, did pose more of a threat to Thors.

Greed was unlucky to play on in the 10th over for 34 with the total now on 68-2. Pitt survived a couple of big appeals shortly after before eventually being given LBW off of Buckingham for 20 in the 14th.

Geraghty and H. Choules calmly kept the score ticking over as we reached 116-3 at halfway. Slightly ahead of Exeter at the same stage.

With Buckingham and Read bowled out Exeter stuck with spin which continued to stifle free flowing run scoring, albeit Choules did take Mcabe for 10 in an over including a 6 into the road.

With 20 to go Thors required 92 to win which felt like a good position against the city side. However with Joe Gore back into the attack for the visitors, disaster struck with Choules being adjudged LBW on 34 and Geraghty (48) getting one that misbehaved the very next over.

Despite the significant setbacks, Thors were still in a reasonable position at 157-5 with 12 to go but the less said about the response the better. McCabe and Jarman cleaned up the rest of the order as we ended 167AO, not using 7 overs.

League Table

The skipper concluded:
“Thought it was a really good game of cricket that was tighter than the scorecard reflects. Harry and Jack were going really well and we were in a great position until we were unlucky to lose both of them in consecutive overs. The less said about what happened afterwards the better!”

Thors remain 6th in the table but will be anxious for some wins as the bottom sides close the points gaps. Spirits in the camp remain high however, helped by a successful iPod shuffle night.

Thanks to Isaac in the score box, Maria for teas and the various volunteers at the social.

Next week the 1s host Plymouth who have an almost identical record to Thorverton this term.

Match Report – 2nd XI v Topsham St James 1st XI (A) – 1st July 2023

The 2nd XI travelled to the University Ground to take on fellow 2022 promotees Topsham St James as the DCL season reached the halfway point.

For the second week in a row, Jack Stirling lost the toss & Thors would be fielding first. The 2nd XI lineup:- L.Vukusic, A.Daldorph, H.Squire, D.Baldock, P.Stirling+, J.Baker, J.Porter, B.Heard, A.Gibbons, J.Stirling, E.Vukusic.

Gibbons & E.Vukusic started the game quietly bowling to the opening pair of Sapwell & Wardell. The openers ran some good singles and crept their way towards a 50 opening stand.

Heard & L.Vukusic came on in a double bowling change which paid off immediately with Wardell smashing a full toss from Heard down L.Vukusic’s throat at deep-midwicket. 50-1. New man Perry followed shortly after as the roles were reversed, Vukusic finding some extra bounce to square the batter up & the ball looped up to Heard in the gully.

Croxall hung around with Sapwell as the hosts meandered to 86-1 at drinks. Sapwell followed immediately after the break, captain Stirling with some sharp turn & bounce finding the good hands of Baldock at slip via the Topsham captain’s glove.

Heard had a second when Croxall spooned him to Henry Squire at cover, before finishing with figures of 2-36. Topsham 105-4.

The wickets tally went up before the run tally as Stirling (3-26) was chipped by Jenkins to Daldorph at mid-on. Incoming Smalley did the same to Porter at extra cover & Topsham were struggling at 110-6.

Luke Vukusic returned & broke the eccentric resistance of Ahmadzai who chipped him to J.Stirling at mid off. Two balls later he clean bowled Armstrong without troubling the scorers, finishing with 3-42. Topsham 131-8.

Khalid Khan joined the determined Williams but only lasted 7 balls before skying the returning Erin Vukusic to P.Stirling for 11. Last man Smalley had his stumps rearranged by Henry Squire’s first ball of the match & Topsham were all out for 155.

Luke Vukusic & Andy Daldorph opened the reply & Thors got off to a flier taking 70 off the first ten overs, mainly thanks to a stream of Vukusic boundaries, ably supported by Daldorph who was taking a rare supporting role.

The score reached 71 as Vukusic brought up his half-century, but departed straight after, chopping on to J.Smalley. Vukusic’s impressive 50 from 39 balls with 9 fours and a six. Daldorph then departed on the same total, patting spinner Wardell back into his hands. 72-2.

Thors then looked to have instigated a collapse as Wardell bowled Squire without scoring.

A patient Paul Stirling assisted the more freescoring Baldock to take the momentum back towards the visitors. The latter found the boundary at regular intervals.

Stirling then departed, caught at slip for a watchful 5 from 35. Baker assumed his supporting role as Baldock passed 50 for the second time this term.

Baker was bowled for 7 with the scores level, before Baldock hit the winning runs, finishing 67* from 51 balls, with nine fours & two maximums.

League Table

The result sees the 2nd XI move to the summit of the D Division East by one point at the halfway point of the season. Thors travel to take on Upottery next who sit 5th in the table but just 5 points behind in a congested league table.

Match Report – T20 v Exeter (A) – 27th June 2023

Thors were back in Covid Cup action on Tuesday night, taking on Exeter at the County Ground in a prelude to the A Division clash between the two sides this weekend.

Slaviero called wrongly at the toss & Exeter skipper Billy Buckingham elected to bat. Thors line up:- D.Robbins, G.Greed, B.Wakeley, J.Geraghty, H.Choules+, L.Vukusic, G.Daldorph, B.Slaviero*, J.Broom, J.Stirling, A.Jopling.

The youthful opening pair of Gribble & Cockram saw out a quiet first over from Slaviero with the new pink ball, before beginning to find some timing from Daldorph’s first over from the pavilion end. With the score 32-0 from 4, Broom & Jopling were brought into the attack, Broom conceding 14 from his first over; Jopling hit for four fours by a keenly sweep-heavy Cockram in his; 63-0 at the end of the first powerplay.

Gribble departed the first ball after the powerplay – with fine leg up, the scoop was brought into play, but the opener failed to execute and was bowled leg stump by Broom for 27 from 17.

Felix Joseph joined Cockram, the latter hitting the first maximum of the night in the gap between the pavilion & Squash Club which sent Geraghty as the unfortunate chase down down Prince of Wales Road. 76-1 after seven.

The double leg-spin pairing of Stirling & the returning Jopling was introduced and added some control. Cockram went past 50 before slapping a sweep down the throat of Billy Wakeley at deep square (51 from 37). Stirling then bowled Joseph for 15 in the same over. Exeter 103-3 from twelve.

Wakeley took over from Jopling, conceding 10 from his first. New man Dube then struck Stirling over long on for six; Stirling finishing with 2-19 from his four overs. Dube & partner Paget went on the attack, taking 20 from Wakeley’s second over. 140-3 with five to go.

Jopling (1-34), returning for his third spell of the evening removed Dube caught by Geraghty at long on for 31 from 18.

The opening pair of Slaviero (0-26) & Daldorph (1-24) returned for the last 4 overs, only conceding 22 in the process. A direct hit by Geraghty to remove Paget & another catch for the overseas to remove skipper Buckingham off the bowling of Daldorph saw the innings close at 164-7.

After a quick turnaround, Robbins & Greed opened the reply, but Thors were soon in trouble at 1-2 after the left arm inswing of Dominic Morgan bowled both Greed & Wakeley for 0.

Robbins & Geraghty began the rebuild with a handful of boundaries taking the visitors to 28-2 from four. Robbins then struck the largest maximum of the night straight back over Dube’s head. Buckingham came into the attack & immediately removed Geraghty for 17; the Aussie trying to cut a ball despite being cramped for room & the ball thundering back into his legs. 42-3.

Choules joined Robbins & the boundaries were swapped for some good running, taking the total up to 80-3 at the halfway mark.

Robbins hit a third maximum of the night & a few singles later went past 50, before hitting his next ball down the throat of Morgan off the bowling of Cockram; Robbins 50 from 36.

A spell of aggressive running from the incoming Vukusic & Harry continued to keep the board ticking over before Vukusic walked past a Cockram delivery & was stumped by Paget for 12. 16 overs gone, 122-5 and Thors needing 43 from 24 balls.

Choules & Daldorph managed 9 from the Jarman bowled 17th over to leave the equation at 34 needed from 18. A tight over next from Morgan saw only three runs conceded & both Choules (34 from 38) and Slaviero gone first ball. 134-7.

The last two overs only saw 6 runs scored but Daldorph gone for 3 and Broom gone first ball. Morgan (4-14) only conceded one from the last; skipper Buckingham the other pick of the bowlers with 3-15. Thors 24 short and left stewing over a few drops in the field which may have changed the game in their favour.
