James May Awarded Life Membership

We are delighted to announce that James “Jimmy” May was awarded an honorary life membership at the Dinner & Dance last night.

Life Membership is reserved for an individual who has given exceptional service to the club. It has only been awarded on 6 previous occasions and is the highest honour our club can bestow.

Jimmy joined Thorverton in 2001 and he has had an increasing influence on our club ever since. Whether as 2nd team Captain; Committee Member; Safeguarding Officer; Colts Manager; Coach; Vice Chair or Chief Executive or cricketer Jimmy has had a significant impact on the club.

Jimmy has led on or been influential on a number of achievements for the club, not limited to:

– Gaining the freehold of the club’s ground through Sport England Grant funding

– Restarting & developing the club’s junior section with Jock Spry

– Obtaining and sustaining Clubmark

– Getting the club compliment with the Safe Hands Management System

– All Stars and Dynamos sessions as part of Junior Cricket – with approx 80 children signed up this year 

– Sustaining life of club through lockdown, including risk assessment for restarting cricket 

– Grants for the following – broadband connection, scoreboard, net refurbishment, new kitchen 

– 1st XI and now 2nd XI promotion with emphasis on home grown players supported by overseas and a cricket committee 

– Revised committee structure with improved attendance and greater level of autonomy across areas of the club 

– Committee structure now includes broader representation of club members 

– Delivered on last 5 year development plan and new plan has been developed and consulted on.

Jimmy recently won the county board’s “Outstanding Service to Coaching Award” in 2021
